Who we are

About Plain English Foundation

This Australian Style GuideTM was developed by Australia’s Plain English Foundation. We specialise in plain English, but we’re also experts in style and usage.

The Foundation has a simple goal: to improve the quality of public language in Australia.

Since 2003, our training, editing and evaluation work has brought clarity and consistency to thousands of texts and millions of words.  We have trained more than 30,000 professionals in clear communication, and we have written or reviewed hundreds of style guides for government and corporate organisations.

The ASG has emerged from this extensive experience. It focuses on the common style questions and issues that writers and editors face every day. It is anchored in current Australian practice, but also captures the latest research on reading habits and accessibility.

The Foundation is based in Sydney's CBD, but we work across Australia. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands where we work, learn and live, and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

About the ASG editors

Our team’s editing expertise covers it all: from technical product standards and banking application forms to government websites and reports. No matter the topic or the medium, we know how to shape words so they are clear, engaging and effective.

We’re passionate about what we do. We’re always willing to make the case for good writing, whether it’s using the active voice or placing apostrophes correctly.

At the same time, we’re not pedants. Language is constantly evolving, and our approach is pragmatic and practical.

You’ll find parts of our guide offer a choice in how to apply a style. We’ll explain the advantages of each option. We can get technical, but we won’t assume you have a PhD in English. And we won’t talk down to you if you’ve never understood the fuss about supermarket signs that say ‘12 items or less’.

Of course, the advantage of an online style guide is we can constantly update it. So if you have a question about something you see or can’t find what you're looking for, please let us know at:
