Street addresses

When addressing correspondence, it is best to follow a consistent set of names and abbreviations at the top of letters and on envelopes for posting. Following are the conventions for Australia.
Street names
Abbreviate street ‘types’, unless they stand alone
20 Pacific Hwy
34 Garden Cres

Use the standard abbreviations for street types, such as ‘Rd’ or ‘St’:

AvenueAve
CrescentCres
DriveDr
EsplanadeEsp
HighwayHwy
ParadePde
PlacePl
RoadRd
StreetSt
TerraceTce

However, take care when an abbreviation for a street type combines with an article.

12 The Esplanade, Bluewater Beach
12 The Esp, Bluewater Beach

And for less common abbreviations, spell out the street type if it might be unclear.

Street numbers
Take care with properties that need non-standard referencing
64A Banksia St
2/19 Banksia St
32–35 Banksia St
When a property is subdivided, the lots will often share a street number but take a different letter. This is common with ‘battleaxe’ houses on residential streets.
In these cases, capitalise the letter and attach it to the number without a space.
1C Redwood Rd
1 c Redwood Rd

To show a unit or level within a building, put that number first, then a forward slash, then the street number. Don’t add any spaces.

6/108 Callistemon Dr
6th floor, 108 Callistemon Dr
Unit 6, 108 Callistemon Drive

For properties that span multiple street numbers, use an unspaced en dash.

265–270 The Terrace
265 – 270 The Terrace

Finally, if a building has a formal name (sometimes used in place of a number), put that first. Add single quote marks around it, if there’s a risk it could be misread.

'The Lodge', 5 Adelaide Ave
5 Adelaide Ave (“The Lodge”)
State and territory names
Use shortened forms with upper case
QLD
TAS

Use the standard abbreviations for Australian states and territories (listed below in order of population), with upper case:

NSWVICQLDWASATASACTNT
Parliament House, Parliament Dr, Canberra ACT 2600
Art Gallery of South Australia, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia 5000
The state or territory is the only part of the address that should take full upper case. There is no need to capitalise the suburb.
Layout
Prefer ‘vertical’ address blocks with minimal punctuation
109 Kirribilli Ave
Kirribilli NSW 2061
Wherever space allows, you should present addresses in block format, with several lines running down the page. This is the easiest format to read, and standard practice for addressing post.

In an address block, minimise your punctuation. Keep any property identifiers (such as slashes or dashes), but don’t use commas between other elements in the address.

3/121–123 Stenocarpus St
East Perth WA 6005

3/121–123 Stenocarpus St,
EAST PERTH, WA, 6005
If space is tight, you can run addresses along a single line. Use commas to separate elements up to the suburb. You shouldn’t need them after that.
