Temperatures

Refer to temperatures using the Celsius scale (also known as ‘centigrade’). This SI unit is accepted worldwide.

Fahrenheit remains popular in some countries (mainly the United States) for everyday temperature readings, but it is now rarely used in Australia.

Style basics
Use numerals followed by the unit of measurement, with no spaces
37°C
98°F

Use numerals for all temperatures, and attach the unit of measurement without leaving a space.

Capitalise the ‘C’ for ‘Celsius’ (or ‘F’ for ‘Fahrenheit’).

To create a degree symbol in MS Word: Insert > Symbols.

Spans
Use ‘to’ rather than a dash
–4°C to 8°C

Avoid dashes in temperature spans as they can be confused with the minus sign.

Repeat the unit of measurement for both numerals in the span.
