Mathematical symbols
Mathematical symbols often show operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. But they can also indicate positive and negative numbers. Use spaces around operator symbols but no spaces when representing positive and negative numbers.
If you’re working in MS Word or another word processor, use the Insert > Symbol function to add the correct symbols. Don’t just hit the letter ‘x’ or the hyphen on your keyboard, as it may not give you the correct symbols.
Equations

84% × $65,000 = $54,600
(214 – 34 + 2) × 5 = 910
Positive and negative numbers
Put the symbol in front of the numeral without a space
+510
–10.62
Ratios
Use a colon to separate the numerals with no spaces
